Managing Director talks to Alistair Darling

Burchell Edwards Managing Director Michael Bruce appeared on Radio Five Live this morning to talk about the tough housing market and to present a message to Alistair Darling, the Chancellor of the Exchequer. The message was to start with the words "Dear Darling" and be in the form of a letter. Michael said that it was a pleasure to be involved and to put forward his view on the current market conditions. Michael's comments are reproduced below:

Dear Darling,

Times are tough with our relationship. I think we can do more together to make things better. There is a real lack of confidence, trust and belief in the market and maybe even your ability or desire to resolve it.

The Housing Market needs dedicated time and focus. People want to buy and sell. Without confidence and a real commitment to resolving the burning issues people face - they put it off. They shy away. They have no choice. They do not think there is an alternative. People want us to put that choice back in their hands.

The market will not change with a part time restricted stamp duty holiday. People are not convinced by Government assisted purchase schemes for new build properties.

People need real help to get them moving. One action we are taking that is crucial to the housing market is giving everyone the ability to defer all their legal fees, stamp duty, survey fees, estate agents fees, HIPs fees, and disbursements for at least a year at no cost to them. They can even choose to spread the cost thereafter over a further three year period.

The Housing Market needs confidence. Mr Chancellor you would be better spending all your time and energy working with Banking Institutions to drive better choice for home owners and purchasers alike. Better rates for everyone not just first time buyers. Government backed interest rates that are attractive and affordable. Deposit assistance schemes will make a big difference.

Many reputable estate agency businesses have fallen victim of market conditions. I would hope that the same does not happen to you. Further action is required now!

Yours sincerely,

Michael Bruce
