Solihull probably came into being about a thousand years ago as a clearing in the forest to which people would come to trade. The Doomsday Survey of 1086 would suggest that it was one of the most sparsely populated areas in the country. Industrial Birmingham has been growing at a prolific rate since the mid 18th century. The opening of the Birmingham to Oxford Railway brought Solihull's isolation to an end forever and it's growth began in earnest.
There was a tremendous amount of land development including houses, industry and parks in the 1920’s. Solihull's population grew correspondingly. in 1921, 21,00 people lived in the area, by 1932 it had grown to 25,00, and by 1941 to 60,000. During the Second World War industry expanded and the Rover Car Company established a factory, which in post war times led to Solihull becoming known as the home of the Land Rover.
Solihull is built on history and breathes in some of the greenest and most pleasant countryside in England. With quaint picturesque villages and glorious awarding winning parks and gardens, Solihull is also a Gold Winner in the national Britain in Bloom Awards, evidence of which can be seen everywhere you visit.
From busy shopping malls to traditional farmers' markets, Solihull offers a whole range of shopping experiences, such as Mell Square Shopping Centre and Touchwood which boasts the only John Lewis store in the West Midlands.
Solihull is served by superb road, rail and air links and is home to the world-famous National Exhibition Centre (NEC), which attracts over 4 million visitors each year. It is one of the busiest centres in Europe, staging prestigious shows and exhibitions throughout the year. Just four miles from the heart of the borough, the NEC is located next to Birmingham International Airport and Birmingham International Railway Station.
Solihull is a place that people want to live and work. It is vibrant, sophisticated and beautiful. There are many shops, bars, restaurants and hotels that make up this gem in the heart of the West Midlands.
